Friday, January 19 at 6:00 pm – Saturday, January 20 at 6:00am
Peoria Civic Center

On any given night in our community, hundreds of men, women and children do not spend the night in their own homes. They stay with friends and relatives, in shelters, and in cars.  And many sleep outside – seeking whatever warmth and shelter from the elements they can find.

Last year the South Side Office of Concern (SSOC) launched a unique new special event called Gimme Shelter – A Night to End Homelessness to build awareness of homelessness in our community and to raise funds to help in the fight to end homelessness in Central Illinois.  The event was a resounding success – far exceeding its fundraising goal and attracting much attention to the issue of homelessness in our community.

In 2018, Gimme Shelter will be held at the Peoria Civic Center on Friday, January 19 through the following morning.  Community members will raise funds for the “privilege” of spending the night, from 6:00 pm in the evening until 6:00 am the next morning, outside in a cardboard box.  Participants will come from all walks of life.  Elected officials, community and religious leaders, media personalities, business people, students, grandparents, moms and dads will all come together for a winter night on the streets of downtown Peoria.   The event will also feature educational presentations focused around the topic of homelessness and the challenges it poses for our society.  Gimme Shelter will bring our community together, raise awareness of the plight of those with nowhere to call home, and provide a powerful opportunity to learn more about homelessness.  Participants will experience a bit of what it might be like to be outside, overnight, in the coldest part of a Central Illinois winter.

As part of our Gimme Shelter event, SSOC is offering a series of educational activities around the issue of homelessness.
Join us from
7:00 – 10:00 pm on Friday, January 19 at the Peoria Civic Center to learn how homelessness affects our community.

Please note, you do not have to be signed up for Gimme Shelter to attend the educational sessions.
Anyone with an interest in the topic is welcome and encouraged to attend. We hope you can join us!
